Byron Bay has a population of 4,959 and is located at the easternmost point of the Australian mainland (Cape Byron), approx. 800 km north of Sydney and 200 km south of Brisbane. The nearest airport is approx. 36.5 kilometers to the south in Ballina. The name of the town comes from John Byron, the grandfather of the poet Lord Byron, a British captain and circumnavigator of the 18th century. Around 32,000 people live in the administrative district of Byron Shire (as of 2006).
