Perth was founded on August 12, 1829 on the Swan River near its mouth into the Indian Ocean by Captain James Stirling with the aim of preventing the French from colonizing the Australian West. Perth was officially founded in 1856 and was named after the Scottish city of Perth, where he was born, at the request of the British Minister of War and Colonies, Sir George Murray.
