The Whitsunday Islands consist of 74 islands, 17 of which are inhabited. The Whitsunday Islands are part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The Great Barrier Reef is located 35 nautical miles to the east, but the islands are also surrounded by smaller reefs.
