What types of campers are there?
There are different types of campervans, depending on how many people you will be accompanying on your trip and what amenities you want.

• A 2-person campervan is a good choice if you are traveling alone or with your partner. It has kitchen equipment so that you can cater for yourself.

• A high-roof campervan offers more space and can accommodate between 2 and 5 people. You can cook and eat in the camper, which is particularly practical for cool evenings without rainy days.

• A motorhome is perfect for families or larger groups as it offers more space and luxury. You will usually find a shower and a toilet in it.

• A 4WD camper is ideal if you are planning to travel off-road and are looking for adventurous routes. The areas in the Northern Territory and Western Australia are particularly inviting for driving fun with a 4WD on unsurfaced roads.

What insurance options are available?
Camper insurance is optional, but we strongly recommend that you take out full insurance to avoid potential problems in the event of an accident. Full insurance usually costs around $30-$70 per day, depending on the provider and vehicle. With some companies TTB (Time to Backpack) can arrange free extras such as additional drivers, camping chairs and tables, baby/child seats etc.

If you don’t take out insurance, you usually have to pay a deposit of at least $3000. Even if you already have a separate insurance policy that includes vehicle rental, in the event of an accident you will have to pay first and can then claim it back from your insurance company later.

However, make sure you follow the local rules and regulations and don’t cause any pollution. A highly recommended app for a road trip is WIKICAMPS, with this app you can find all the campsites, find the reviews and facilities, whether they are free or what the fees are etc.

Do I need an international driver’s license in Australia?
You need an international driver’s license if you want to rent or buy a vehicle in Australia. This can be applied for in advance at the driving license office in your place of residence in Germany and costs approx. 15 euros.
